Whitsunday’s Part 4: Another Week off Hook Island

Arriving in Airlie Beach to pick up Holly and her friend for the second time gave us a strong sense of deja-vu as barely two weeks had passed since we had last seen her. However this trip the wind wasn’t quite as favourable and we only had five nights to explore. This meant that instead of trying to find new places to visit we decided to spend more time in some of the nicer anchorages we had only briefly visited the previous trip.

So for five days we explored the top side of Hook and its surrounding islands. To start we visited Blue Pearl Bay on Hayman Island, which we had missed last time and enjoyed an afternoon of pleasant snorkelling. Following that we visited the amazing Luncheon and Manta Ray bays, snorkelling amongst the coral and swimming with the huge Bat fish, Giant Travally and Maori Wrasse where we were just as amazed as the last time.

This was then followed by a visit to Butterfly Bay where we had a delightful day on the beach and a lovely picnic lunch while the trade winds roared outside.

However once the trade winds abated we decided to head to Langford Island where we spent another day on the beach and enjoyed a short walk along the sandbar at low tide.

Our week spent with Holly seemed to be over in a blink of an eye and so before we knew it we were back in Airlie. However before departing Holly was eager to show us some of inland Queensland, as without a car we hadn’t left the coast since our time in Tasmania. So shortly after arriving in Airlie we all piled into the car and went in search of Cedar Creek Falls, a waterfall about 20km from the coast. After a short drive we had arrived at the car park and with our picnic lunch packed we went in search of the falls, which we found was only about 100m beyond the car park. Unfortunately the falls were barely running as it was mid dry season and it had been many weeks since we’d had any decent rain, however there was still a huge pool of water at the bottom of the cliff face and a small trickle running in. However the lagoon was crowded with people so we decided to walk to the top of the falls in search of a more secluded spot to eat our lunch. Following a track it wasn’t long before we had reached the top of the falls and had found a beautiful spot over looking the lagoon to enjoy our picnic . Since it was our last afternoon together we spent some time enjoying the serenity of the falls and each others company as following our day out Holly and her friend were due to leave.

After soaking up some sunshine we headed back to Airlie and parted ways, expecting to be heading off further north in the coming days.
